Summary
This chapter traces the way that Jews have been depicted in French literature from the 18th century to the present, including writers such as Voltaire, Balzac, Céline, and Proust. It examines both negative (antisemitic) and positive (philosemitic) representations of Jews, arguing that the ambivalence surrounding the figure of the Jew reflects a larger ambivalence toward the various ideas that Jews represent.

Summary
Universalism, long seen as synonymous with the French republic, fell out of favor among left-leaning intellectuals in the last decades of the twentieth century. The idea that one law applies equally to all people and that the individual (rather than the ethnic or religious group) is the sole bearer of rights within the state, French universalism was criticized for masking social inequalities and suppressing minority difference. Since the start of the new millennium, however, conflicts over the integration of France's large Muslim minority have led many politicians and intellectuals to reassert what they take to be universalism’s imperative: that ethnicity and religion must be excluded from the public sphere. For the new universalists, the health of the French republic depends on resisting communautarisme, the privileging of ethnic or religious affiliation over national affiliation, which they often associate with American-style multiculturalism.
France's new universalists frequently fault Muslims for their supposedly ostentatious displays of difference and seeming unwillingness to integrate. And although contemporary French Jews are also criticized for their communautarisme, Jewish emancipation during the French Revolution is cited as a model for the successful incorporation of a minority group within a universalist framework. According to most accounts, the revolutionaries extended citizenship to the Jews on the condition that they assimilate to French culture. The famous speech by Count Stanislas de Clermont-Tonnerre in favor of Jewish emancipation, delivered in 1789, has long been seen to express the conditional nature of this offer: ‘Il faut refuser tout aux juifs comme nation, et accorder tout aux juifs comme individus.’ To become worthy of rights, it has long been assumed, the Jew had to become like other Frenchmen. Even defenders of the Revolution's treatment of Jews, like Robert Badinter, subscribe to this view: ‘c’est toute la doctrine de l’assimilation qui est exprimée la par Clermont-Tonnerre.’
But did the Revolution really demand assimilation of the Jews as a quid pro quo? In this essay, I will show that the Jews’ defenders at the end of the eighteenth century argued for emancipation with a range of results in mind. Their answers to what would later come to be known as the ‘Jewish Question,’ which asked whether Jews belonged in the modern nation-state and, if so, on what terms, can be plotted on a continuum between the opposing poles of assimilation and pluralism.

Summary
Of all the features that define the contemporary moment in France, certainly one of the most disturbing is the resurgence of antisemitism. After falling for decades, the number of antisemitic incidents in France began rising dramatically after the outbreak of the Second Intifada in 2000. The brutal attack on a kosher supermarket in January, 2015 by a young man influenced by radical jihadist ideology typifies what has begun to be called the ‘new antisemitism’ or the ‘new Judeophobia.’ This ‘new antisemitism’ very often takes the form of anti-Zionism. It attributes a range of crimes to Israel and by extension to all Jews. Scholars have noted that whereas traditional antisemitism is racist and xenophobic in orientation, the perpetrators of the ‘new antisemitism,’ many of them descendants of North African immigrants to France, are themselves very often the victims of racism and xenophobia.
This being France, intellectuals have not hesitated to engage in heated polemics around the issue. And the philosopher Alain Badiou has placed himself at the center of these debates. One of contemporary France's most visible intellectuals, Badiou is known primarily as a theorist of ‘the event,’ of subjectivity, and of aesthetics. Though no longer a Maoist, he has remained true to revolutionary Marxism, and his radical political positions have made him a hero to many on the far left both in France and the United States. In recent years, he has written extensively on Jews, denouncing not just Zionism but all forms of Jewish communautarisme in ways that have earned him the enmity of a range of adversaries, including Alain Finkielkraut, Eric Marty, and Jean-Claude Milner. As I will detail below, critics have accused him of crossing the line from anti-Zionism to antisemitism. Badiou has responded vigorously to these attacks, accusing his ‘inquisitors’ of deploying the charge of antisemitism against him in order to discredit his criticism of Israel and thereby further the ends of Zionist and American imperialism.

Summary
Primary headache disorders are among the most prevalent conditions affecting various populations worldwide. Personality traits and psychiatric disorders are important comorbid and possibly causal conditions in migraine and mediators of stress impact on migraine or tension-type headache. These include neuroticism, anxiety, panic disorder, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorders. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a well-recognized risk for and modulator of headache. Peterlin and colleagues evaluate the relative frequency of PTSD in episodic migraine (EM), chronic daily headache (CDH), and the impact on headache-related disability. The goal of behavioral management for stress must be to improve headache frequency and severity and to improve quality of life by increasing patient self-knowledge, disease knowledge, and sense of control and self-efficacy. The role of stress as a modifier or trigger of headache should be actively evaluated in all patients with recurrent or chronic headache disorders.

Summary
Paris might rightfully claim to be the capital of modernism. It was there that the first experiments in both poetry and the novel - as well as in painting, sculpture, architecture, and music - led to a rupture with the classical tradition. It was there that the avant-garde first launched its attacks on an ossified bourgeois culture. In the century spanning 1850 to 1950, Paris attracted writers and artists not only from all corners of France, or even Europe, but from around the world, who saw in the City of Light a beacon of artistic freedom, as well as a particularly fertile climate for artistic experimentation. The fact that so many of the terms and slogans we associate with modernism originated in French - la modernité, l'avant-garde, l'art pour l'art (“art for art's sake”), il faut être de son temps (“you must be up to date”), épater les bourgeois ("shock the middle class") - signals the extent to which modernism, despite its cosmopolitan ethos, bears a Gallic imprint.
And yet modernism as a critical category has never played a particularly enabling role in French cultural history. Unlike in other national literatures, such as the Anglo-American tradition, modernism in France does not designate a school or a movement. Few French writers or artists labeled themselves modernists.

Since 1921, professors hanford, mohl, and others have told us much about the chronology and scope of Milton's reading in history and related subjects; but as yet we lack similarly detailed information regarding the time and nature of Milton's private studies in Greek and Roman literature. For at least a partial knowledge, however, of when and how Milton studied the Classics, source materials exist in annotations found in four of Milton's Greek texts: his Pindar, purchased in 1629, his Aratus, purchased in 1631, and his Lycophron and Euripides, both purchased in 1634. Here—and for the most part in his own hand—Milton has left us evidence of some of his Classical studies during his latter years at Cambridge and his later life; and an analysis of these annotations should supply us with information regarding Milton's intellectual history that we have hitherto lacked.
